On Tuesday, unidentified assailants assassinated Dr Anthony Eze, a professor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
It was learned that Eze was a lecturer at the institution’s Faculty of Education.
The motive for the attack was unknown, but sources said the deceased was driving his children to school in the morning when the hoodlums stormed his home.
It was gathered that when he saw the armed men, he tried to flee, but they chased him down and shot him repeatedly in the chest.
According to reports, the gunmen arrived in a Toyota Corolla salon and, after carrying out their plan, fled to an unknown location, while residents in the area fled to safety.
“We were here this morning when Dr Eze was driving out of his house and suddenly a Toyota Corolla salon pulled towards the entrance of his house and when he tried to drive back, they followed him and shot him, emptying about four bullets into his chest and running away,” an eyewitness said.
“We rushed him to the General Hospital, Amaku but the doctor at the hospital confirmed that he was already dead.
Attempts to contact the Principal Assistant, Registrar, in the DIPR Admin Office Unit, Directorate of Information and Public Relations in the institution, Mrs Chika Gladys Ene, were futile because her phone line was disconnected”.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, also stated that the command has not received any information about the incident. Ikenga on the other hand promised to contact them once they had more information.
