The gunmen who abducted Senator Nelson Effiong have demanded the sum of N200million as ransom to free the former lawmaker, Vanguard is reporting.
It can be recalled that a gang of unknown gunmen kidnapped the immediate past senator that represented Akwa Ibom South in the National Assembly at his lounge, a popular sit-out along Oron Road, Uyo, the state capital late Sunday night, 5th of September, 2021.
A source close to the family said, “They have reached the family and are demanding for 200 million naira. And the question is, where is the family going to get that kind of money with the way things are in the state? We pray for him to regain his freedom.”
Effiong, a one time Speaker of the State Legislature, has spent over one week in the kidnappers’ den.
It remains unclear if there is any political undertone in his kidnapping, considering the internal squabble rocking his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the oil-rich state.
Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Mr Odiko MacDon, a Superintendent of Police is yet to comment on the development, however, the Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew had vowed to get to the roots of the incident and free him from the gunmen.
