No fewer than four individuals were killed on Sunday, April 28, many others wounded, as suspected herdsmen invaded the Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to residents, the attackers targeted mourners at Ugwuijoro Nimbo, resulting in the immediate death of four people.
While some bodies have been recovered, search parties have been formed to locate numerous missing individuals.
Chijoke Okunna, a resident, revealed that seven people sustained severe machete wounds, including Okeh Simon Ugwu, Oruku Okeh Chukwuebuka, Julius Ogbonna Odiegwu, and Gabriel Ugwor Ezea.
The community has been deserted, as confirmed by a police source among the Rapid Response Team dispatched to the area.
The Enugu State Police has acknowledged the attack, though further details are pending, according to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson.
This incident is reminiscent of the April 2016 attack on the Nimbo community by Fulani herdsmen, which resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people.
In a separate event, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen claimed three lives during an attack in Opi-Agu community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
This incident occurred on Monday, September 11, 2023, just days after another attack in Agbada Nenwe community, where three villagers were killed by masked gunmen.
According to a source, “assailants were herdsmen who arrived around 4 pm on Monday with their cattle in the farms of the villagers.
“However, after the villagers told them to leave their farms, they left and returned later to attack and kill the villagers.
“When they came with their cattle, the cattle started eating and destroying crops and vegetables planted by the farmers, some of whom were still in their farms. They reacted and chased the herders with their cattle away and warned them never to return to the farms anymore.”
