Gunmen launched another attack on Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang district of Jos south Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau state, on Wednesday, December 31, killing seven residents.
The national publicity secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said the gunmen took advantage of the crossover celebrations to carry out the attack.
He said the violence occurred around 11:00 p.m., just as residents were preparing to welcome the new year, leaving at least seven people dead, several others injured, and numerous homes destroyed by fire.
Tengwong said that as of Thursday morning, seven bodies had been recovered, while search and rescue operations were still ongoing, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.
According to him, the attack occurred despite prior security alerts indicating that some communities in Jos south LGA were at risk of violence.
He said the warnings were not adequately acted upon by security agencies before the incident.
He described the attack as part of a broader pattern of violence affecting rural communities in Plateau state, noting that such incidents have continued to raise concerns over the safety of lives and property, particularly during festive periods.
He stated that he is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
