The security situation in Benue and Plateau States has taken a deadly turn with gunmen claiming the lives of at least 55 individuals in the troubled North Central region.
Despite a 24-hour curfew imposed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in Mangu local government area, attackers targeted Kwahaslalek village and neighboring communities, resulting in the deaths of 25 people and significant property destruction.
In a separate incident, suspected militia believed to be herders, carried out deadly assaults in Benue State, claiming the lives of 30 individuals.
The attacks have prompted residents to flee their homes in Ejima and Ogwumogbo communities in Agatu local government area, seeking refuge from the violence.
Expressing concern, the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) in Plateau criticized the military’s response, accusing them of not adequately protecting residents during the attacks.
The group called for the withdrawal of the military and their replacement with Mobile Police (MOPOLs) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Residents recounted the horrifying events, including the burning of a family of five during the turmoil in Mangu town.
The Plateau state Commissioner of Information and Communication, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, condemned the relentless killings and urged swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In response to an explosion near the Bureau of Public Enterprises premises in Maitama, Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force clarified that it was not a bomb explosion but an overheated metal refuse container that caused the blast.

He emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional approach, including investments in education and economic development, enhanced security agency synergy, and collective efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.
Vice President Kashim Shetima, represented by his chief of staff, affirmed the government’s commitment to lasting peace, acknowledging the critical role of security in national development.
The roundtable participants highlighted the urgency of decisive action, accountability, and an inclusive approach to address the persistent insecurity in the Northern region.
