About 1,000 corps members nationwide have been blocked from relocating to another choice of state, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, has said.
Mr Ibrahim said this while addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the 2020 inspectors’ development programme.
According to him, most corps members tried to manipulate the staff of the NYSC to get their relocation done, a situation which he said is against the ethics of the scheme.
He said relocation is free and allowed even though it must be on health, marital or insecurity grounds.
Over 1,000 corps members, according to the Director-General, tried to deceive the staff to get their relocations done, but when this was discovered to be fraudulent, they were canceled and withdrawn.
This development comes weeks after The StreetJournal reported that a bill considering the discontinuation of the NYSC scheme scaled second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The bill, which passed first reading, was sponsored by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker from Rivers state, Awaji-Inombek Abiante.
Abiante, in the explanatory memorandum of the proposal, listed the various reasons why the NYSC should be scrapped.
“For children of the rich, how many of them would want to go to Sokoto or Yobe? It is still the children of the poor that are sent to those places (where) they are butchered,” he said.
