Ibadan Declares 21-Day Mourning Period Over Olubadan’s Demise

In accordance with a longstanding tradition in Ibadan, a 21-day mourning period has commenced in honour of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, beginning on Tuesday, 8 July 2025. Oba Olakulehin passed away on Monday at the age of 90 in Ibadan. Members of the Olubadan-in-Council are expected to start the process of selecting a new monarch once the mourning period ends. The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, is slated to succeed the late Oba Olakulehin. This follows the traditional succession plan of the ancient city. The nomination of the new Olubadan will be made by the Balogun Olubadan, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, with the support of the Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole, at a meeting yet to be scheduled. This gathering will take place at the new Olubadan Palace, situated in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan.
