The Special Intervention Squad (SIS) has been launched by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, in response to the escalating insecurity within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The primary objective of this newly formed unit is to address the increasing activities of kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements, particularly in border towns surrounding the nation’s capital.
To enhance the security infrastructure and provide a proactive response to security threats, the SIS will be responsible for comprehensive patrolling of communities situated along the FCT’s borders.
The squad’s mandate includes swift intervention and mitigation of violent attacks, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety of residents in the nation’s capital.
The establishment of the SIS marks a key initiative under IGP Egbetokun’s administration, emphasizing the commitment to tackling the persistent threat of violent crime.
Since assuming office in June, the IGP has consistently underscored the importance of adopting proactive measures to address the security challenges facing the country.
The IGP, upon assuming office, announced the SIS as a flagship project, reflecting its pivotal role in effectively addressing security challenges.
Comprising specially trained officers equipped to respond rapidly to significant security incidents, the squad embodies the IGP’s dedication to curbing criminal activities in the country.
Meanwhile, DC Mohammed Sanusi has been unveiled as the commander of the SIS, with the force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, providing details of the squad’s recent achievements.
Adejobi stated, “Behold, the new commander IRT, DC Mohammed Sanusi. His team has arrested many kidnappers and recovered arms and ammunition, many of which were displayed recently.
“Within just two days of its launch, the SIS, through the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), successfully apprehended two gun runners and four suspected kidnappers operating in the FCT and neighboring communities.
“As operations continue, the IGP and his team are committed to providing regular updates on these developments.”
While anticipating a media briefing soon, they emphasize the importance of collective support in their mission to strengthen security measures and ensure the safety of citizens.
