The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, launched a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) on Wednesday, January 17, to address the surge in insecurity and rising incidents of kidnapping in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
During the official flag-off ceremony at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP expressed deep concern over recent unfortunate events in the state.
He emphasized that the launch of SIS is a crucial step toward combating criminal activities and announced plans to replicate similar initiatives in neighboring states, eventually extending them to all states across the Federation.
The IGP highlighted the significance of SIS, stating that it symbolizes the police force’s rejection of criminality and its commitment to reclaiming streets and neighborhoods from lawlessness.
The operation involves a thousand personnel in each state, equipped with sophisticated arms, drones, and vehicles to counteract security threats.
This comprehensive approach is aimed at dismantling criminal networks entrenched in communities.
The IGP emphasized the collaborative nature of public safety, with the SIS engaging in community-oriented policing to strengthen bonds between the police force and communities.
However, the new Special Intervention Squad will be deployed to tackle emerging threats, employing a coordinated and intelligence-driven approach to address the evolving security landscape.
The IGP reassured Nigerians, especially residents of the FCT, of improved security and emphasized that the operation is not merely symbolic but a tangible demonstration of the police force’s dedication to security.
While acknowledging collaboration with the military and other security agencies, the IGP called for unity against the forces threatening society.
The launch of SIS serves as a beacon of hope in the collective effort to make the FCT, its environs, and the entire nation safer, ensuring swift justice and peace across Nigeria.
