Incorruptible IGP Egbetokun set to resign on health grounds

Nigeria may soon witness the exit of one of its most disciplined and no-nonsense law enforcement chiefs.

Kayode Egbetokun, widely regarded as an incorruptible officer, is reportedly set to resign on health grounds following a formal request to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Known for his firm leadership style and uncompromising stance on discipline within the force, Egbetokun has earned a reputation as one of the most honest police officers Nigeria has ever produced.

His tenure as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has been marked by a strong push for professionalism, internal accountability, and renewed public confidence in the Nigeria police force.

If his resignation is confirmed, it will mark the end of a significant chapter in the nation’s security architecture, one defined by integrity, courage, and steadfast commitment to duty despite mounting pressures.

For many Nigerians, his possible departure raises a critical question: who will step into the shoes of a man many consider a rare symbol of incorruptibility in public service?

Egbetokun was appointed Nigeria’s 22nd IGP by Tinubu on June 19, 2023, an appointment formally confirmed by the Nigeria police council on October 31 of the same year.

At the time of his appointment, Egbetokun was 58 years old, placing his statutory retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60.

However, amendments to the police act by the national assembly in 2024 overrode general civil service rules, granting serving IGPs a fixed four-year term regardless of age or years of service.

Under this legal framework, Egbetokun was statutorily cleared to remain in office until October 31, 2027, unless removed by the president.

Today, Tuesday February 24, following Egbetokun followed through and tendered his resignation following a directive from Tinubu.

Preparations are now underway for a formal handover to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu of the Force Criminal and Investigation Department (FCID) annex, Lagos.

The transition is anticipated to be announced in the coming days.
