The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday confirmed that it has registered Peoples Democratic Movement as a political party.

A statement signed by INEC’s Secretary, Mrs A.C Ogakwu indicated that the registration was in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act of 2010.

Registered along with the PDM is another party, Independent Democrats (ID). The Secretary stated that INEC approved the names, constitutions, manifestos, logos/flags and lists of national executive officers of the parties.

The PDM as a group was founded by the late General Shehu Yar’Adua when he was actively involved in politics. Upon his demise, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar became the leader of the group/

Though Atiku professed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party less than 24 hours before the PDM became a registered party, there are indications that he and his associates may officially move to the party soon. Not less than 10 Governors are believed to be involved in the registration of the PDM.
