The People’s Democratic Party caucus of the House of Representatives has backed their colleagues in the Senate over the call for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a joint meeting on Thursday, 28 July, the PDP lawmakers said the state of the country was appalling and therefore issued a six weeks ultimatum to the President to solve the numerous challenges of the country or risk being impeached.
The minority leader of the House of Reps, Ndudi Elumelu, revealed this after a closed-door meeting of a joint minority caucus of the National Assembly.
Elumelu said the signatures will be gathered to impeach the President if the security situation is not addressed.
He also drew attention to the general state of the nation, including the exchange rate and aviation crisis.
This is coming after the minority leader of the Senate, Senator Phillip Aduda, made the position of the lawmakers known on Wednesday, 27 July, while speaking at the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The Senators had staged a walk-out of the plenary when Senate President, Ahmad Lawan refused to accede to a motion moved by Philip Aduda that the Senate should debate the cases of rising insecurity in the country
This development is coming days after bandits threatened in a viral video to kidnap Buhari and Governor Nasri El-rufai of Kaduna State.
Earlier in the week, members of Boko Haram ambushed the Presidential Guards Brigade in Abuja, killing three elite officers who had sustained gunshot injuries.
A few weeks ago, Mr Buhari’s advance convoy was attacked in Katsina, the same day Boko Haram militias broke into Kuje Prisons and freed their members and other criminals.
