Islamic cleric who saved 300 Christians during 2018 massacre in Plateau, dies at 92

The revered Muslim cleric known for sheltering Christians during the 2018 Plateau attacks, Abdullahi Abubakar, has died at the age of 92.

The late chief imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State gained widespread recognition for his courage during the June 23, 2018, attacks, when armed assailants targeted communities across Barkin Ladi, killing scores of residents.

Abubakar famously opened his mosque and home to at least 300 Christians fleeing the violence, refusing to surrender them to the attackers. His act of bravery earned him accolades both nationally and internationally.

He was nominated for the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger, MON, by the Federal Government and was personally commended by the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2019, the United States, US, awarded him the International Religious Freedom Award, with the US Department of State praising his courage in risking his life to save others.

In interviews following the attacks, Abubakar explained that his actions were guided by a principle of compassion and respect for humanity, irrespective of religious affiliation.

His death marks the loss of a figure many regarded as a symbol of interfaith solidarity in a region often troubled by communal violence.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described Abubakar as a symbol of peace, unity and selfless leadership.

In a condolence message, the governor noted that the late cleric’s commitment to interfaith harmony and protection of the vulnerable earned him both national and international recognition.

Mutfwang added that Abubakar’s passing leaves a significant void in Barkin Ladi LGA and urged residents to uphold the values of compassion and unity that the imam exemplified.

“On behalf of his family, the government, and the people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his deepest condolences to the family and all those mourning the loss, praying that Almighty God grants them comfort and strength to bear the painful loss,” the statement reads.
