Israel: First fatal attack since Gaza ceasefire began

A stabbing in the Israeli port city of Haifa on Monday left one person and the attacker dead, authorities said.

“A terrorist exited a bus, stabbed multiple civilians, and was subsequently neutralized by a security guard and a civilian at the scene,” the police reported.

It was the first deadly attack since a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas began on January 19.

The stabbing came as negotiations on the next stage of the deal stalled after the six-week first phase of the ceasefire ended at the weekend.

What do we know about the attack? The stabbing took place at central Lev HaMifratz bus station in Haifa, a coastal city in northern Israel home to a mixed Jewish and Arab population.

A man aged around 70 was pronounced dead with four injured people treated, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service.

The attacker is identified as an Israeli Druze resident of the town of Shfar’am, a city with a large Druze minority.

Police said that the man, who returned to Israel last week after spending recent months abroad, also held German citizenship.
