An extended truce between Israel and Hamas is due to expire, with the militant-Islamist group still thought to be holding around 150 hostages taken during the October 7 terror attacks on Israel. DW has more.

Work to secure extension of temporary truce continuesMediators are continuing to work on getting another extension to the temporary truce between Israel and the militant-Islamist Hamas group, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.
That’s as the initial two-day extension approaches expiry on Wednesday.
There have also been reports from both the AFP and Reuters news agencies that US and Israeli intelligence officials are meeting with Qatari and Egyptian mediators to get another extension.
CIA Director William J. Burns and Mossad chief David Barnea were set to meet with Qatari and Egyptian mediators according to those reports.
The temporary halt in hostilities has allowed hostages to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
On Tuesday another 12 hostages were released and 30 more Palestinian prisoners were freed.
The temporary truce, which began on Friday, has also allowed aid to flow into Gaza. The enclave had been sealed off in the wake of Hamas’ terror attack on October 7, during which around 1,200 people were killed and some 240 people were taken hostage.
Israel began bombarding targets belonging to the militant group, designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, after vowing to destroy Hamas.

US airlifts several tons of aid for delivery to GazaThe US said on Tuesday it had airlifted over 54,000 pounds (24.49 tons) of medical supplies and food aid to a humanitarian logistics hub in Egypt.
The supplies are to be sent on to civilians in Gaza, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement.
Sullivan said three deliveries were planned over the next few days, which would help “save lives and alleviate the suffering of thousands in Gaza.” Sullivan said.
The aid deliveries are the first by the US military since the conflict began following the October 7 attacks on Israel by militant-Islamist group Hamas, which the US, Germany and others classify as a terrorist organization.

Tuesday’s developments in the Israel-Hamas warThe fifth day of an extended truce between Israel and the militant-Islamist Palestinian group Hamas saw 12 more hostages returned to Israel.
Among them was a dual German-Israeli citizen, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed.
In return, Israel released 30 Palestinian prisoners.
Since the pause in fighting began last Friday, Hamas has released 81 hostages, mostly Israeli nationals, while Israel has freed 180 Palestinian prisoners.
Mediator Qatar is holding talks with US and Israeli officials about a more permanent truce to the conflict. Fighting began following the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas, which the US, Israel, Germany and several other countries classify as a terrorist organization.
