United States, US, President Donald Trump has again suggested that the conflict between the US and Iran could end soon, claiming there are very few remaining military targets in the country for American forces.
Speaking on Wednesday, Trump indicated that the war, which began on February 28, may soon wind down as US forces have already struck most of their intended targets.
According to the US President, there is practically nothing left to target and the war will end soon.
“Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he added.
Since the start of the conflict, Trump has delivered mixed signals about the war’s timeline and objectives.
However, his latest remarks point toward a possible conclusion as global oil prices continue to climb amid the fighting.
The conflict has also triggered political debate in Washington, with critics accusing the White House of launching the operation without fully preparing for potential consequences.
One concern raised by analysts involves the risk of Iranian interference with oil shipments passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy supplies.
Tensions escalated further on Wednesday when Iranian forces fired on two commercial vessels in the Gulf region, leaving at least one ship ablaze.
Despite the incident, Trump insisted the situation around the key shipping corridor would stabilize quickly.
“you’re going to see great safety, and it’s going to be very, very quickly in the strait.”
The US president also said American forces had neutralized most of Iran’s ships capable of laying naval mines.
Trump said US forces took out most of Iran’s mine-laying ships in one night, though adding that he did not believe the Iranian government had placed any of the devices in the waterway yet.
He further claimed that Iran’s military capability had been largely dismantled, arguing that its naval forces, air power, air defenses and senior leadership structures had effectively been wiped out.
Even so, Trump stressed that the US had not yet concluded its military campaign.
Officials in the administration have previously stated that the primary objectives of the war include preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and dismantling its ballistic missile program.
Although Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei was killed earlier in the conflict, the US government has not formally declared regime change in Iran as an official goal of the war.
