Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, including eight women, in Baalbek a city in the eastern part of Lebanon, on Wednesday, October 30.
The Mayor of Baalbek, Mustapha al-Shall announced that over 20 strikes were recorded on Wednesday, October 30 in the Baalbek region, with five occurring within the city.
The Israeli military stated that it targeted Hezbollah command and control centers and infrastructure in Baalbek and Nabatiyeh, located in southern Lebanon.
The military also stated that it targeted Hezbollah fuel depots in the Bekaa Valley, where Baalbek is situated.
While no specific details were provided, Lebanon’s state news agency reported that diesel tanks were struck in the town of Douris.
Mayor Shell noted that images showed a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky.
These attacks occurred as Hezbollah’s newly appointed secretary-general declared that the group would maintain its military strategy against Israel and would not call for a ceasefire.
Speaking a day after his appointment, Naim Qassem indicated he would continue the agenda of his predecessor, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, last month.
After weeks of airstrikes that have devastated large areas of southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Israeli military seems to be broadening its operations against Hezbollah in eastern Lebanon which is another region where the group has significant support and influence.
Baalbek is a vital population center in the Bekaa Valley,close to the Syrian border.
Hezbollah has built part of its infrastructure and recruited fighters from the area.
This region is also strategically important for Hezbollah, serving as a corridor that connects the group to its allies in Syria and Iraq and ultimately to Iran.
