Israeli surgeons have carried out a successful surgery on a Palestinian boy that was hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.
The boy was immediately airlifted to a Medical Center in Jerusalem and the doctors found out that the ligaments holding the posterior base of his skull were severely damaged.
The skin holding the head is intact but his skull is detached from the top vertebrae of his spine.
The orthopedic surgeons who operated on the patient, said the procedure, which took place in June 2023, was very complicated and took several hours to carry out.
They added that the surgeons used new fixations in the damaged area and fought to save the boy’s life.
The doctors narrated that the ability to save the child was thanks to their knowledge and the most innovative technology in the operating room.
After the surgery, the medical report shows that the boy has no deficits in neurological, sensory, or motor dysfunction and that he is functioning normally and walking without aid after such a long process.
“This is not a common surgery at all, especially not on children and teens. A surgeon needs knowledge and experience to carry out this”, said the Israeli medical expert.
The young boy has been discharged with a cervical splint but will continue to be monitored by the hospital.
“What saved him were professionalism, technology, and quick decision-making by the Israeli medical team”, the father said.
