Kingsley Chinda, minority leader of the house of representatives, has appeared before the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party’s governorship primaries in Rivers state.
Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor federal constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the national assembly, was screened on Saturday as an aspirant in the APC for the 2027 Rivers governorship election.
His appearance before the APC panel has further fuelled speculation over a possible defection from the PDP to the ruling party, although he has yet to officially confirm any move.
Chinda is among two prominent allies of Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who obtained the APC governorship nomination forms.
The second aspirant is Dax George-Kelly, director-general of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA).
Questions, however, trail George-Kelly’s eligibility to contest while serving in office, following a directive issued by the presidency through the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), mandating political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to resign on or before March 30, 2026.
Other governorship aspirants contesting on the APC platform include Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers state, and Tonye Cole, a former governorship candidate.
