The Kwara state police command has arrested four people in connection with the murder of a village chief imam in Tsaragi, Edu local government area, following a mob attack.
The incident was reported to have occurred on Tuesday night, after 25 year old Ibrahim Gana, a resident of Sokunkpan village who had been on hospital admission, died of an undisclosed illness.
Following his death, the victim’s brothers, accused the chief imam of the community, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, of being responsible for their brother’s demise through spiritual means, thereby launching an attack on him.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the spokesperson for the command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said police operatives quickly launched an investigation and arrested four suspects.
“In an act of mob violence, Muhammad Shaaba and Mahmud Gana allegedly mobilised several other individuals and attacked the chief imam with offensive weapons, leading to his death.
“Police operatives swiftly commenced an investigation into the incident, 4 suspects have been arrested with efforts ongoing to arrest other individuals connected to the crime,” Ejire-Adeyemi said.
The commissioner of police, Adekimi Ojo, warned residents against taking law into their hands under any circumstance emphasizing that jungle justice remains a criminal act punishable by law.
He further assured them that the command remains committed to maintaining peace and order across the state.
