The Lagos state government has sealed Dowen college in Lekki Phase 1 for its indiscriminate disposal of waste into drainage channels, an action that violates state environmental laws.
The managing director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, while confirming this stated that the enforcement team, working with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), sealed the school after it was reportedly caught in the act.
This action is part of the state government’s renewed zero tolerance campaign against environmental infractions, specifically the indiscriminate dumping of refuse that officials say contributes to flooding.
The closure follows recent warnings from the commissioner for the environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who had vowed that offenders would face strict sanctions.
Members of the Lekki residents association alerted authorities to the issue, leading to the arrest of a cart pusher who reportedly confessed to being hired by the school to dispose of its waste.
