The Lagos State Fire Service has declared that the state which is regarded as the hub of commercial activities in the country has recorded 1,642 fire incidents between January and June 2023, with 42 persons killed, as part of the mid-year report by the state’s Fire and Rescue Service.
The Service also said that, 177 persons were rescued were among those it successfully rescued in fire emergencies, while noting that regrettably properties worth N14.62 billion were destroyed as a result of fire incidents across the state.
The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, who reeled out the mid-year report explained that, out of the 1,462 emergencies attended to, fire disasters ranked highest, with 924 incidents in different parts of the state.
The state fire service in its breakdown of the report observed that 92 emergencies on rescue were recorded, 41 on salvage, three on explosion, and two on building collapse, while 400 false calls were received.
The Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the state fire service, Agboola Ololade said that, the estimated properties saved by the agency amounted to N87.72 billion, leaving the properties loss to N14.62 billion.
The statement emphasized that fire incidences in the state increased indiscriminately from the same period compared to the previous year, indicating that no improvement so far.
The statement identified through its investigations that carelessness and negligence were the major causes of the disaster.
It also noted an increase in unfavorable calls from individuals which had continued to happen due to the change of strategy in the attendance to distress calls without double-checking for false calls.
