At least four people have been killed following a land dispute between Ogwor and Umuobor villages in Ivo, Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi State.
Chinasa Okorie, the coordinator of Akaeze Development Centre, confirmed that this incident occured on Wednesday, February 19.
He noted that the dispute is between Ogwor and Umuobor villages, who have been in conflict over a piece of land known as ‘Elueke.’
Okorie state’s that the Ebonyi government had declared the disputed land a ‘buffer zone’ in the month of January and instructed both villages to avoid the contested area.
He said, “Among the four persons killed, three were said to be part of a contingent that entered the disputed land to harvest yams on Wednesday while a woman was killed on Monday.”
Okorie urged the communities to maintain peace and refrain from any actions that could worsen the conflict.
Adding that, “The government has declared it a buffer zone, so nobody is allowed to enter the land.”
However, the state’s police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, stated that the command was only informed about the murder of a woman on Monday, February 17.
He said, “We know about the incident involving the killing of a woman on February 17.
“That is the one we have the information. The command is investigating the matter.
“Officers and men have been deployed to the area.”
