The former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday, December 23, finally met his bail condition after spending two weeks in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Bello Kawu of the federal capital territory high court in Abuja granted Malami interim bail after considering a bail application filed by his legal team.
The application was brought before the court under motion number M/17220/2025.
In granting the request, the judge ordered that Malami be released under conditions similar to those earlier proposed by the EFCC.
These include the surrender of his international passport and the provision of two sureties acceptable to the court.
Justice Kawu directed that the sureties must comprise the director general of the Nigerian legal aid council and a serving member of the house of representatives representing the Augie/Argungu federal constituency.
The court also affirmed that bail requirements earlier met by the applicant, as contained in an order dated November 28, 2025, remain valid and binding.
According to the judge, the interim bail was approved based on exceptional hardship while the substantive application remains pending.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to 5th January, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
Malami has been held in EFCC custody since 8th December over allegations of money laundering, abuse of office, and the acquisition of assets that significantly exceed his official income.
