In a shocking incident, a man, whose identity remains unknown, died on Saturday, April 12, while attempting to steal the Agemo deity statue at the Mafowoku roundabout in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Residents were shocked to discover that the golden statue, which had stood for 21 years, was missing, with the body of the suspected thief found nearby.
A viral video showed a man in a blue top lying motionless next to the fallen statue.
Hakeem Quadri, a local resident, confirmed the incident, expressing the community’s disbelief at the tragic turn of events.
“The incident is real; it happened right in front of my house. We all heard people making noise, and when I got outside, I saw that the Agemo statue that was commissioned about 21 years ago had been removed while the person suspected to have been behind this sacrilegious act had been struck dead,” Quadri said.
“I learnt that the body of the deceased had been moved to the mortuary.”
