Oluwagbemiga Shogbola, 30, is said to have stabbed his friend, Victor Olabiyo, to death in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State over $150 (N61,950) from a business deal between them.
Shogbola, also known as Oja or Federal, allegedly accused the victim of defrauding him and keeping all of the money for himself.
As the quarrel between the friends devolved into a brawl, it was learnt that some of their acquaintances sought to intervene, but to no avail.
Shogbola was said to have shared a picture of Olabiyo on his WhatsApp status about 8 pm on Tuesday, May 3, with the hashtag ‘RIP.’
Around 11 pm, Shogbola, who is presently being held at the state police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, stabbed the victim to death.
Onyemaechi Onwuzuribe, one of the deceased’s acquaintances, said Shogbola was pursued as he sought to flee the scene on a motorcycle.
Motorcyclists are claimed to have declined his plea for a ride after seeing his bloodstained clothes.
The culprit reportedly dashed to the Ilishan-Remo Police Station and handed himself to the police.
Onwuzuribe said, “Federal had blood all over his shirt, and I saw him running away though I did not know that he had stabbed Victor (Olabiyo). I knew that they fought earlier that morning over $150 and as soon as I saw him running, I sensed that he must have done something.
“I grabbed him and just as I did, I saw people running after him and crying that he had stabbed Victor to death. That was when I and others tried to hold him, but he escaped and went to the police. If the boys had caught him, they would have lynched him.”
Adebowale Opasanya, the victim’s brother, stated that his brother was a professional fashion designer.
He described the occurrence as shocking because the two friends were close.
“Victor’s death was shocking to us. I am dazed that his friend, Federal, was the one who killed him just because of $150. I had warned him about some of his friends, but I never thought Federal would do this.
“We heard that Federal ran to Ilishan from Ifo due to something of this nature; he was accused of killing in that area as well,” he added.
The Divisional Police Officer SP Kunle Olaitan said the police were investigating the matter, The Punch reports.
Shogbola was a suspected internet fraudster, according to a police source.
The deceased’s body was reportedly deposited in Sagamu’s Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence.
He stated that the culprit has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department’s Homicide Section in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
