Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp has unveiled its intention to launch a new feature in June 2024, allowing Nigerian creators to monetize their content on the platform.
The announcement came following a meeting between Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, and President Tinubu at the presidential villa on Thursday, March 21.
President Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s determination not to lag behind in the era of technological advancement.
He expressed his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities in information and communications technology (ICT), enhancing capacity, and fostering collaborations.
In a statement, President Tinubu remarked, “Nigeria boasts a vibrant, talented, and resourceful youth population. As we embrace the AI-enabled future, it’s imperative to equip our youth to compete globally.”
He affirmed Nigeria’s readiness to lead Africa in digital technology and emphasized the pivotal role of data in national development.
He called for mutually beneficial collaborations to drive technological advancements, stressing the importance of a win-win scenario.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, said Meta platforms are critical platforms in Nigeria.
“We must continue to engage to create opportunities for our people so they can also share in global prosperity. Digital technology is an opportunity to connect Africa to contribute to the development of the world,” the Minister said.
