Tito Jackson, a founding member of musical group “The Jackson 5” and the brother of Michael Jackson popularly known as MJ has passed away at the age of 70.
He died after suffering a heart attack while driving from New York to Oklahoma, USA on Sunday, September 15.
He gained fame alongside his siblings Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, who later became a global pop icon before his death in 2009.
In the 1970s, the group released popular hits such as “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” “Blame It On The Boogie,” and “I’ll Be There.”
As the third of nine Jackson children, Tito played guitar and contributed backing vocals.
He was also the final sibling to embark on a solo project, releasing the album Tito Time in 2016.
Tito continued to tour with his brothers Jackie and Marlon, and they performed at a festival in the UK earlier this month.
His death was announced by his sons Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson on Instagram, “we are shocked, saddened and heartbroken.
“Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their wellbeing.”
They added, “he will be missed tremendously.
“It will forever be ‘Tito Time” for us.
“Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is ‘Love One Another.
“We love you Pops.”
Tito was frequently described as the quietest member of the group.
In addition to his work with his brothers, he continued to perform with a blues band.
He also served as a judge on the BBC singing show Just The Two Of Us in 2006.
The nine Jackson siblings also include sisters Janet, LaToya, and Rebbie, as well as their brother Randy.
The Jackson 5, which was managed by their father Joe Jackson, was formed in Indiana in 1964.
They became a sensation and are frequently recognized as one of the original boy bands after achieving four consecutive number one singles in the US at the start of the decade.
They released four studio albums and sold an estimated 150 million copies worldwide, leading to their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
Their success set the stage for star member Michael to pursue a solo career while still with the Jackson 5.
He eventually left the group in 1984 following the massive success of his “Thriller” album.
Tito performed with The Jacksons in the UK at the Boogietown Festival in Surrey on Monday, September 8.
Their latest show took place in Munich, Germany on Tuesday, September 9.
Tito shared a Facebook post from Munich, mentioning that the family had visited a memorial for Michael.
He wrote: “Before our show in Munich, my brothers Jackie, Marlon, and I, visited the beautiful memorial dedicated to our beloved brother, Michael Jackson.
“We’re deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy.
“Thank you for keeping his spirit alive.”
Tito is survived by his three sisters, four brothers and their mother Katherine.
