Troops of 5 Brigade Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, on Friday, October 20, repelled an attack by the Islamic State West African Province, ISWAP, in Damasak town of Borno state.
The terrorists were said to be ambushed by the troops while they were on patrol.
They engaged the terrorists in a gun duel, forcing the criminals to withdraw into the bush.
During the encounter, six of the ISWAP fighters were neutralized while an unconfirmed number of the terrorists were wounded.
However, three soldiers were wounded during the encounter, as weapons and a bus belonging to the ISWAP fighters were recovered by the troops.
This development is coming days after troops of 3 Battalion OPHK repelled an attack by ISWAP on Gamborun Ngala LGA of Borno state.
On October 12, 2023, troops of 25 task force brigade killed six ISWAP fighters while repelling an attack in Sabon Gari in Damboa LGA of Borno.
ISWAP is a militant group and administrative division of the Islamic State, IS, a Salafi jihadist militant group and former unrecognised quasi-state.
It is primarily active in the Chad Basin, and fights an extensive insurgency against the states of Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Turkey.
The group is an offshoot of Boko Haram with which it has a violent rivalry in Nigeria and Cameroon.
