The dispute over interconnect debt between MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and Globacom Limited has been successfully resolved.
This was announced by the Nigerian Communications Commission on Thursday, February 8, in a statement by Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs Department.
This resolution occurred within the 21-day grace period provided by the NCC to Glo in January.
Initially, 61.54 million mobile subscriptions on Glo’s network were at risk of being disconnected from making calls to MTN.
The NCC had warned of potential barring of calls between Glo and MTN lines in January, extending the notice period by 21 days to facilitate an agreement between the parties, considering the impact on subscribers.
In the statement, the NCC confirmed the settlement of the issue, withdrawing the disconnection approval granted to MTN for Glo.
The Commission emphasized its commitment to adherence to license terms, especially those outlined in interconnection agreements.
To prevent future interconnect indebtedness, the NCC will request records and updates from Mobile Network Operators, adopting a transparent approach to industry indebtedness.
“In order to proactively address and prevent future instances of interconnect indebtedness within the industry, the commission will be requesting relevant records and regular updates from MNOs, as well as adopting a transparent approach towards industry indebtedness”, the statement read.
