Four people were confirmed dead and two others sustained injuries in an accident that occurred on Thursday, August, 22 in the Enugada area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed this on Friday, August 23.
An eyewitness who chose to remain anonymous said that a truck, believed to have lost control, crashed into a vehicle, a commercial motorcycle, and several pedestrians on the roadside in the night hours of Thursday.
He said “I think the truck lost control and rammed into a vehicle and a motorcycle, including some pedestrians who were walking by the roadside. About six people were lying lifeless.”
Videos of the accident scene obtained showed the lifeless and mutilated bodies of some of the victims and sympathizers’ wailing in the background though rescue efforts are still ongoing.
In a follow-up statement, the TRACE spokesperson reported that 4 people died at the scene, while 2 others were injured.
He said, “According to an eyewitness account, the truck developed a brake failure (mechanical) while descending from Itoku inward Ago-Oba towards Enugada, Lafenwa, and rammed into 2 motorcycles and a Honda CRV, killing the 2 motorcyclists and the two passengers they were both carrying, while the driver of the Honda CRV Car was injured.
“Initially, 6 were presumed dead including the injured Honda CRV driver and a pedestrian but they were revived due to the efforts of the first responders and members of the public who gathered at the scene of the crash.
“Unfortunately, the driver and the motor boy disappeared and were nowhere to be found by the time the truck stopped.
“The bodies of the dead victims and the injured have been deposited at a hospital by police officers. However, the identity of the hospital would be released later.
“While TRACE, FRSC and the police commiserate with the families of the deceased, motorists are again urged to service their vehicles as at when due and ensure major mechanical components are in good working condition before setting out on a journey,”
