The Nigerian navy under Operation Delta Sentinel (OPDS) on Friday, March 13, announced the destruction of an illegal crude oil storage site within the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny area of operations in Rivers state.
The Nigerian navy’s spokesperson, Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was carried out as part of intensified efforts directed by the chief of naval staff, Idi Abbas, to combat crude oil theft and illegal bunkering across Nigeria’s maritime environment.
According to Folorunsho, operatives leveraged the Nigerian navy’s maritime surveillance technology to uncover the concealed storage site, which was hidden beneath thick vegetation within creeks in the Opotumbi general area.
“FOB Bonny elements moved swiftly to the site and discovered four dugout pits containing a cumulative 17,500 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil,” he said.
The recovered products were subsequently destroyed in accordance with extant operational guidelines.
He added that the operation demonstrated the Nigerian navy’s renewed momentum in combating crude oil theft and maritime crimes in the region, while safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime resources and critical national assets.
