A joint team of operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian army came under attack by drug cultivators early Monday during a raid to dismantle cannabis farms in Ukpuje, Owan west local government area of Edo state.
Acting on intelligence about large-scale cannabis cultivation, the operatives had launched an operation at dawn on the farms when gunmen opened fire in an attempt to repel them.
One NDLEA operative sustained injuries after being struck by a sharp object and was later taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The operatives eventually made a tactical withdrawal to prevent further casualties.
NDLEA’s Edo state commander, Mitchel Ofoyeju, confirmed the incident, describing it as another reminder of the dangers faced by security personnel involved in anti-narcotics operations.
He said the agency would continue to intensify its crackdown on drug production and trafficking networks in the state.
“We are grateful that no life was lost. This will not deter our ongoing efforts to rid Edo state of illicit drugs,” Ofoyeju said.
He added that the operation was part of a broader campaign targeting cannabis cultivation in rural communities.
He also appealed to residents and community leaders in Ukpuje and neighbouring areas to support law enforcement by sharing credible intelligence that could aid in identifying those behind the attacks and drug networks.
The NDLEA says it will continue to collaborate with the Nigerian army and other security bodies to secure the area and ensure that those responsible for the ambush are brought to justice.
