The Niger state police command has arrested 19 year old Dauda Yunusa, for allegedly stabbing a 20 year old, Abdul Adamu, to death during an election campaign in Lapai local government area of the state.

Police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday, following a dispute between them over a campaign cap.

“A report received indicated that there was a misunderstanding between one Abdul Adamu, 20, of Habibah road, Lapai, and one Dauda Yunusa, 19, of Baddegi area, Lapai, over an issue of campaign cap in a councillorship campaign entourage.

“Dauda stabbed Abdul with a knife on the back and was taken to the general hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead,” Abiodun stated.

Yunusa was later traced and arrested at Dangana village and is currently in police custody while the investigation continues.

The incident happened as political parties wrapped up campaigns ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, November 1, with Thursday and Friday declared public holidays for the exercise.

Police have assured residents of Lapai and surrounding communities of heightened security to prevent further violence during the elections.
