The restrictions take effect immediately and cover all forms of travel, including diplomatic missions, commercial activities, humanitarian operations and tourism.
Authorities in Niamey said the action was taken on the grounds of reciprocity and the defence of national sovereignty, pointing to what they described as unfriendly and punitive steps adopted by the US government against Niger in recent months. No date has been set for a reassessment of the policy.
The move unfolds against the backdrop of worsening relations between Niger and several Western countries following recent political transitions in the Sahel nation. Those shifts have triggered sanctions, the suspension of aid programmes and changes in security cooperation.
In response, Niger has been recalibrating its foreign policy, distancing itself from long-standing Western partners while expanding engagement with alternative international allies.
Security and diplomatic analysts caution that the ban could significantly disrupt the work of humanitarian organisations, development agencies and international bodies that depend heavily on American staff operating in Niger.
They also warn that the decision may hinder diplomatic dialogue and security collaboration in a region already grappling with militant violence, economic pressure and political uncertainty.
So far, the US has not released an official reaction to the announcement. Nevertheless, diplomatic observers anticipate that the US government may challenge the decision through formal channels, arguing that it risks further isolating Niger and intensifying its confrontation with Western governments.
Nigerien officials, however, maintain that the measures will remain in place without a defined end date, signalling a firm posture as the country seeks to assert greater independence in the conduct of its external relations.
