The Nigerian Olympic Committee, NOC, has confirmed it successfully submitted its expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games before the March 28, 2025, deadline.
However, a full bid can only proceed with formal approval and support from the federal government.
Nigeria previously vied for the 2014 edition of the Games but lost to Glasgow, Scotland.
In a statement by NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, the committee emphasized that Abuja’s bid to host the 2030 Games represents a chance to highlight the nation’s progress, boost its international image, and reinvigorate interest and investment in sports across the country.
“That experience will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the NOC statement read.
“This would also provide a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness.”
Glasgow, Scotland, has been selected to host the next edition of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from March 17 to 29, 2026.
The event was originally awarded to the Australian state of Victoria, but the state government withdrew its commitment, citing escalating expenses as the primary reason for the decision.
