The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the name of the majority leader of the house of representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, from the list of elected house of representatives members.
INEC, on Sunday, February 26, announced Doguwa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the national assembly election in the Doguwa/Tudunwada federal constituency of Kano state.
He polled 39,732 votes to defeat the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Yushau Salisu Abdullahi, who secured 34,798 votes.
However, INEC, on Tuesday, March 7, said that the election result of Doguwa was “declaration made under duress.”
Recall that Doguwa was recently arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing of many persons and burning of the secretariat of NNPP, Kano state chapter, during the just concluded national assembly election.
Doguwa was remanded in prison custody by a chief magistrates’ court in Kano state on Wednesday, March 1.
However, a federal high court sitting within the state, on Monday, March 6, granted N500 million bail to Doguwa over charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of firearms, mischief and incitement of public disturbance.
