Nigeria and the United States have inaugurated Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap in Abuja on Tuesday, in a move aimed at strengthening military collaboration and improving security operations amid rising insurgent attacks across the country.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) through its spokesperson, Samaila Uba.
The initiative comes as part of renewed efforts by both countries to deepen defence ties, particularly in intelligence sharing, strategic planning and counterterrorism operations.
It also follows increased support from the United States, including the deployment of about 200 troops and MQ-9 surveillance drones operating from Bauchi State.
According to officials, the drones are being used strictly for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, while American personnel are serving in advisory roles rather than engaging in direct combat.
The move had earlier sparked concerns among Nigerians over foreign military involvement in internal security operations.
Despite the collaboration, insecurity has persisted, with insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) intensifying attacks in parts of northern Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration, the head of the US delegation, Cate Dave, said the working groups would focus on strengthening institutional capacity and long-term defence strategies.
He said, “Sustainable counterterrorism success depends on building resilient defence systems, not just achieving battlefield victories.”
On his part, Nigeria’s delegation leader, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, noted that the partnership would enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
He added that both countries are committed to practical outcomes and sustained collaboration to improve regional security.
