Two Nigerians, Kenechi Ndukaife Atuchukwu and Michael Okoya, have been arrested in Klerksdorp, North West Province, South Africa, on charges of drug possession and dealing.
The arrests follow a comprehensive investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks. According to Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for the Hawks in North West, the investigation, initiated in 2022, involved undercover operations that led to Atuchukwu’s apprehension for allegedly selling drugs.
A warrant for Atuchukwu’s arrest was executed on Friday, 12 September 2025, in Klerksdorp. He is reportedly linked to a case involving Michael Okoya, who was arrested the previous week for similar charges.
Both individuals appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on 15 September 2025. The case was postponed to 29 September for a formal bail application, with the accused remaining in police custody.
The Hawks, established in 2008, are South Africa’s primary agency for investigating serious organized crime, economic crime, and corruption. They operate under the South African Police Service and are tasked with addressing high-priority criminal activities across the nation.
The arrests of Atuchukwu and Okoya underscore the Hawks’ ongoing efforts to combat drug-related offenses in South Africa. Authorities continue to monitor and investigate such activities to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
