A classroom building at the Odokerere High School in Ikorodu, Lagos state, collapsed on pupils while they were in class on Thursday, January 15, sparking concerns over the safety of public school infrastructure in the state.
The school, owned by the Lagos State government, reportedly caved in during class hours.
In a statement, the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) reassured the public that no casualties were recorded in the incident, adding that all students are in perfect condition.
According to SCRPS, the affected classroom block had already been slated for demolition to make way for a larger facility to accommodate the school’s growing student population.
The statement explained that the planned demolition was part of efforts to construct a befitting classroom edifice capable of accommodating the school’s large population.
Meanwhile, Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate relocation of pupils to nearby schools to ensure that academic activities are not disrupted.
A team of SCRPS officials is also scheduled to visit the school to conduct an on-the-spot assessment, which will enable the government to work out modalities for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block.
The SCRPS concluded the statement by reiterating the state government’s commitment to providing safe and modern learning environments for students.
