The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has unveiled the standardized version of the reintroduced national anthem.
Originally composed by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams, this anthem was used from 1960 to 1978.
It will be recalled that in May, President Bola Tinubu signed into law the bill to revert to the old national anthem and since its reintroduction, several versions of the anthem have emerged.
To address this, the NOA released a standardized version on Wednesday, June 5, to regulate the various versions that have emerged.
Below is the new lyrics of the reintroduced national anthem:
Stanza 1
Nigeria, we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongues may differ
In brotherhood, we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Stanza 2
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle, honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
Stanza 3
O God of all creation
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
President Tinubu before now had expressed that the reinstatement of the old national anthem has consistently been his primary focus.
He stated that the National Assembly enacted the law reinstating the old national anthem, and he is obliged to comply with the legislation.
Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should be safeguarded and embraced.
