The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, has ordered shipping companies and their agents to suspend the implementation of newly approved tariffs with immediate effect.
The directive was issued in a notice released by the council’s management in Lagos, following ongoing consultations with key stakeholders in the maritime sector.
According to the council, the move was prompted by widespread concerns regarding the timing, structure, and potential impact of the revised charges on port users and logistics operations.
“In order to safeguard fair competition, transparency, and sectoral stability, the council considers it necessary to halt further implementation,” it said.
The council stated that the suspension would remain in place pending the outcome of consultations and a comprehensive regulatory review.
“Accordingly, all affected operators are mandated to revert to, and apply strictly, the tariff regime previously in force,” the statement read.
It warned that any deviation from the directive would be treated as a violation of regulatory compliance and could attract sanctions under existing laws.
“The council will, upon conclusion of consultations and internal reviews, communicate a definitive position on the matter,” it added.
Reaffirming its mandate, the council emphasized its commitment to effective regulation, the protection of cargo interests, and the promotion of a fair and efficient maritime transport system.
It also urged all operators to comply fully and immediately with the directive.
