The commandant general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Audi Abubakar, on Friday, March 27, equipped state formations across the country with drones and a range of modern operational gear to tackle insecurity.
The distribution took place at the corps’ annual strategic meeting held at the NSCDC national headquarters in Abuja, which drew commanders and senior officers from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Abubakar said the deployment of the equipment marks a new phase in the corps’ operations, with a strong focus on integrating technology to address evolving security challenges, including terrorism, illegal mining, vandalism, and other forms of economic sabotage.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for renewing his tenure as commandant general, describing the development as a call to intensify efforts and urging officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and discipline.
He added that his leadership remains committed to rewarding dedication, resilience, and loyalty among officers.
Abubakar further highlighted significant welfare improvements recorded under his leadership, noting that long-standing challenges regarding unpaid salary arrears and stagnated promotions have been successfully resolved.
He stated that these interventions have significantly boosted personnel morale and operational effectiveness across all formations.
He also disclosed that over 400 illegal refineries have been destroyed, alongside multiple arrests and successful prosecutions of smugglers and illegal miners.
Each state formation received three drones for aerial surveillance along with operational backpacks fitted with mini-tablets, solar chargers, and GPS trackers.
These tools are integrated with situation room connectivity packs to allow for the real-time monitoring of personnel movements during field operations.
The distribution also included an extensive array of protective and tactical gear, featuring 100 bulletproof vests, 100 helmets, 200 pairs of combat boots, and 100 pairs of knee and ankle caps per state.
To enhance nighttime and undercover operations, Abubakar deployed 20 night-vision goggles, 20 body cameras, ten pairs of binoculars, five pen recorders, and various torchlight batons to each command.
It also includes 50 shocking batons and 20 chain cutters to aid in rapid response and asset protection.
Furthermore, each formation was provided with 200 sets each of Agro rangers corps uniforms, conventional blue uniforms, and white uniforms, as well as berets, belts, water dispensers, and copies of the NSCDC code of conduct, the NSCDC act, and the corps’ standard operating procedure manual.
Abubakar warned that the distributed equipment must be used strictly for official duties and must not be diverted for any other purpose, adding that anyone found violating the directive would face severe sanctions.
He further stated that, in line with the renewed hope agenda, the corps will prioritise capacity building and training to ensure officers demonstrate professionalism and integrity while carrying out their core mandate of protecting critical national assets.
Abubakar also stressed the importance of intelligence sharing and collaboration with other security agencies to enhance coordinated responses to security challenges across the country.
