The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun State has intercepted and seized 4,200 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in the Akere area of Ipokia Local Government Area.
The operation was led by NSCDC State Commandant Idowu Ojelabi, who noted that the marine unit acted on credible intelligence about suspected smugglers’ activities.
He added that after two days of surveillance, the team spotted the suspects transporting the illegal product toward the Benin Republic via a creek.
“The surveillance team on Thursday, February 8, spotted a boat transporting several sacks and kegs suspected to contain illicit PMS along the Akere waterways, near the Nigeria and Benin border. Upon noticing the presence of NSCDC officers, the suspects attempted to evade capture by fleeing the scene and leaving behind the seized PMS.
“The intercepted contraband, totaling 4,200 liters of petrol, was carefully concealed in 42 sacks and eight kegs”, he said.
Ojelabi added that this successful operation not only prevented the illegal transportation of petroleum products across the border but also dealt a significant blow to the activities of smugglers operating in the area.
Meanwhile, the commandant reiterated the NSCDC’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and economic stability of the state.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public in combating criminal activities. He also assured the community that the NSCDC would continue to work tirelessly to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice.
This interception comes amid ongoing efforts by the NSCDC to curb various forms of criminality in Ogun State.
Recently, the agency also paraded individuals involved in the vandalism of electricity cables and drug peddling, further demonstrating its proactive approach to maintaining law and order in the region.
