Students of Nasarawa state university Keffi (NSUK), complain bitterly on how they’ve been treated unfairly in respect to hostel accommodations.
It’s been brought to our notice that so many students are without hostels and it is not only as a result of inadequate hostels but because hall administrators and some school staff usually keep some rooms for their family members and friends. So on the hostel dashboard it reads ‘occupied’ or ‘no hostel’, when there are still lots of rooms available and without occupants.
From information gathered, hall admins are known for their corrupt practices of leaving comfortable rooms for their relations and they sometimes collect money and tips in return. Hall admins move around like mini gods. Their authorities are second to non.
Sometimes due to corruption there’s also the problem of over allocation of rooms, where 6 people are meant to occupy a particular room but because of forgetfulness and the tip collected by hall admins, they allocate the room to 7 or more people which leads to confusion amongst room mates till they all go back to the hall admins office to verify which occupant isn’t suppose to be there.
However students themselves are also part of this corruption, they click a room and pay for it with the normal fee of N13,000 then resell it to other students for outrageous prices like N50,000 and more depending on if the bed space comes with a locker or not.
Students from poor families are unable to pay the outrageous fee from their co students and they are unable to click a room normally from the school because some staff of the school reserve rooms for their relations, hence they are stuck and frustrated.
The favoritism of Nasarawa state indigens is also on another level. Like if you’re not from Nasarawa state and you’re in NSUK, you don’t exist. You don’t get any student priviledge at all.
According to Precious, a student of NSUK “ Nobody should say anything about ‘one Nigeria’, because i’m not from Nasarawa state, i’m being treated like crap. I’m not blaming anybody cause it’s like that in almost other universities, both state and federal. But if we continue like this everybody should school in their state of origin and forget about one Nigeria”.
Nsuk moved its faculty of Agric to Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa but refused to develop where the faculty is. No hostel accomodation at all for students and the place looks really lonely because bushes are everywhere. Under this faculty of Agric, there’s a very lucrative course; Nutrition and Dietetics.
Students have refused to accept this course because of where the faculty is sited and because the school made no provision for hostel accomodation. Each time students go to the place they return and quickly apply for a change of course because of how inadequate the lafia campus is in Shabu.
Surprisingly, there’s still enough land in Keffi, people are still wondering why the faculty was moved to Lafia.
This is a serious problem in Nigeria, because Nigeria is supposed to have so many graduates from that field and if students keep running away from that faculty because of the poor environment it is sited, then we’ll have limited graduates from that field.
NSUK is therefore called upon to look at these issues and tackle them immediately.
