The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities to enhance academic relevance and align higher education with global standards.
The announcement was made in a circular released by the NUC spokesperson and signed by the executive secretary, Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
The commission confirmed the inclusion of the new programmes on Friday, October 24, in the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), addressing all vice chancellors.
Experts from the Nigerian university system contributed to developing the 70% national component of the programmes in March 2025, while universities are expected to design the 30% institutional component according to CCMAS guidelines.
The newly approved programmes include: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Classical Christian Education, Human Kinetics (Sport Management focus), Geomatics Engineering, Community Health Science, Intelligence and Security Studies, Islamic Economics and Finance, Parasitology and Entomology, Telecommunication Science, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), Cooperative Economics and Management, Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering.
Universities planning to offer these programmes are expected to commence implementation in the 2025/2026 academic session, subject to a successful resource assessment.
Vice chancellors were also instructed to distribute the approved CCMAS documents to relevant faculties, departments, and academic planning units.
