The pioneer chairman of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Taraba State chapter, Faruk Kunini, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to extend its investigation to Taraba State House of Assembly. Kunini, in a chat with The Guardian in Jalingo, yesterday, lamented that lawmakers, who ought to checkmate the executive arm of government, had become mere rubber stamps in the hands of Governor Darius Ishaku. Citing the alleged corruption by the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and other government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), he blamed the lawmakers for the state’s underdevelopment, due to their failure to properly carry out their statutory responsibilities. The veteran labour leader cited the numerous loans the Assembly approved for the governor to collect. He said: “The majority of Tarabans are now looking at the House of Assembly as a loan-approving institution. Every member of the Assembly is in control of all the affairs in their respective local councils. Kunini beckoned the anti graft commission to immediately beam searchlights on the Assembly to save the state from collapse. Top government functionaries from the state, especially from the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, it would be recalled, have in recent times been invited for interrogation by the zonal office of EFCC in neighbouring Gombe State.
