Obasanjo opens up on disagreement with Tinubu, third term, corruption

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up on his disagreement with the newly elected Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu when the latter was the Lagos state governor.

Former President Obasanjo bared his mind on the matter and many other critical national issues that characterized his administration during a chat with a media personality, Chude Jideonwo.

When asked about the allegation that he (Obasanjo) attempted to cripple the economy of Lagos state, Obasanjo said, “That was absolute nonsense. If he doesn’t know then he doesn’t know anything.

“Is it that one that made him to have ALPHABETA?”

Recall that, Tinubu as former governor of Lagos state had claimed that he received zero allocation from the federal government when he was governor, especially as he created more local councils- Municipal Area Council.

President Bola Tinubu had  governed Lagos state from 1999 to 2007, before becoming Nigeria’s current President.

Meanwhile, former president Obasanjo also used the opportunity to make disclosures that some state governors were involved in the infamous third-term fiasco during his administration.

Then in 2006, a bill seeking to amend the 1999 constitution and extend term limits by another four years, suffered a setback at the national assembly.

Obasanjo blamed some governors as the brain behind the third term agenda.

Speaking on his past administration’s stance on anti-corruption and the failed third term bid, the former president said that, “Some of the  governors were doing it for themselves.

“Because if the president did a third term, they too would have had a chance for a third term.”

But despite explanations by yhe statesman, it would be recalled that, in 2004, Segun Osoba, a former governor of Ogun state, criticised Obasanjo for perceived inaccuracies recorded in his book ‘My Watch.’

Then, former governor Osoba had criticized Obasao by saying that the former president almost “went on his knees” to beg for a third term.

Also, a former president and governor during the period, Goodluck Jonathan corroborated the fact that Obasanjo really wanted a third term.

Jonathan noted that the bid failed due to resistance from the national assembly.

Similarly, a former senate president, Ken Nnamani, said that lawmakers in the fifth national assembly, made sacrifices in legislative careers by seeing to the truncation of the controversial third term bid.
