Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has criticized security officials at the Government House in Benin for barring his supporters from attending a reception held in celebration of his Supreme Court victory on Friday, July 11.
In response to the incident, the governor ordered the immediate redeployment of security personnel on duty at the venue, including the Camp Commandant.
Earlier that day, hundreds of jubilant supporters, including market women and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had gathered at the Benin Airport as early as 7 a.m. to receive the governor.
Upon his arrival at about 12:40 p.m., they joined his convoy on foot in a lively procession, chanting solidarity songs as they moved toward the Government House.
However, upon reaching the venue, the supporters were turned away by security operatives, who claimed entry was reserved for Very Important Personalities (VIPs) only.
The action sparked outrage among the crowd, many of whom expressed disappointment over being denied access after hours of waiting and walking.
Reacting through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo described the restriction as unauthorized and contrary to the inclusive spirit of the occasion.
He reaffirmed his commitment to being a people-centered and accessible leader, adding that he deeply values the contributions of his supporters and the media.
To address the incident, the governor announced the formation of a committee to investigate those responsible, warning that his administration would not tolerate actions that disrespect or alienate the very people who supported his journey.
The statement read, “This decision did not originate from me, nor does it reflect my values. I will never knowingly authorise any action that disrespects our supporters or members of the press. As a governor elected by the people, I remain committed to openness, inclusion, and respect for every stakeholder.
“This administration is committed to fostering an atmosphere of unity and transparency, and I assure all supporters and stakeholders of their valued place in the journey to rebuild and reposition Edo State.
“For this, I am ordering the immediate redeployment of security personnel, including the Camp Commandant, who were on duty at the government house in Benin on the day of the incident.”
