A former Osun state deputy governor, senator Iyiola Omisore, has declared his ambition to contest the 2026 governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Omisore disclosed his intention in a post on his official X handle on Saturday, October 4, stating that a formal declaration will hold on Tuesday, October 7, at the APC secretariat in Ogo-Oluwa, Osogbo.
The event, which carries the theme “Fix the broken, restore our dreams,” is slated for 10 a.m. on October 7.
“My beloved people of Osun state, after deep reflection and wide consultations, I have decided to formally declare my intention to contest for the governor of Osun state in 2026 under our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Omisore wrote.
He emphasized that his campaign agenda would center on rekindling hope, improving governance, and charting a path toward a more prosperous future for the people of Osun state.
“This is not just my mission, it is a collective one. I humbly invite you to join me as we take this bold step towards the Osun rescue mission 2026,” he said.
Omisore, a prominent political figure in Osun state, is regarded as one of the leading contenders for the APC governorship ticket.
Omisore’s political career spans over two decades.
He first served as deputy governor of Osun state from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) before representing Osun east senatorial district in the national wssembly from 2003 to 2011, where he also chaired the influential senate appropriations committee.
In 2014, he contested the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but was defeated by the then-governor, Rauf Aregbesola.
Four years later, he ran again under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2018 election before formally joining the APC in 2021.
Within just over a year of his defection, he rose to become the party’s national secretary at its national convention in Abuja, following the withdrawal of his main challenger.
